Bank statement from Türkiye: apostille through a notary

A Turkish bank statement is not a public document; the apostille goes on an official certificate added to it, such as a notarial act.

A bank statement (hesap dökümü) or a reference letter written by the bank may be asked for in visa, student residence and immigration files, where the receiving authority wants to see that the applicant can support themselves. These papers come from a private bank, not from a public authority, and they are not public documents within the meaning of the Apostille Convention. An apostille is still possible, but it is placed not on the bank document itself but on an official certificate added to it, here a notarial act. This page describes that roundabout route and what is, and is not, attested along the way.

A bank document is not a public document

The Convention counts as public documents those emanating from courts, administrative documents, notarial acts and official certificates placed on documents signed by private persons. A statement or reference letter signed at a bank branch falls into none of the four groups on its own: a bank employee’s signature is not the signature of a public official, and the provincial and district governor’s offices do not attest it.

Entering the chain through a notarial act

The route is to bring the document into the fourth group, an official certificate on a privately signed document. Article 1 gives the authentication of a signature as one example of such a certificate, and the Onikişubat District Governor’s Office names the notary’s certified true copy (aslı gibidir) as a way for a copy to be considered for an apostille; whether a bank official in fact signs before a notary in such files was not verified on this site. A notarial certification of a signature and a notarial true copy are both notarial acts, and under article 199 of the Turkish Notaries Law their apostille is issued by the governor or district governor of any province or district; since the end of 2024 the office no longer has to be in the same district as the notary. Which of the two ways is used is settled with the bank and the notary, and with the receiving authority where it states a preference.

The apostille does not verify the bank’s signature

Under article 5 of the Convention the apostille attests the signature, the capacity of the signatory and the seal; on a notarial act, the signatory is the notary. The Onikişubat District Governor’s Office writes the same for notarised translations: the element attested by the apostille is the notary’s certifying signature and capacity, not the content. The apostille therefore does not attest the bank’s signature, the existence of the account or the correctness of the balance; it shows only that a notary issued a copy or certified a signature in due form. This limit should be understood before the file is assembled: an “apostilled bank statement” is not a document that makes the balance official.

Visa and immigration files: the bank’s signed letter

A visa or immigration authority may want no apostille on a bank document at all, only the bank’s letter with a handwritten signature and stamp, and whether it takes a statement printed from online banking is likewise its own rule. Which authority wants an apostille and which only a signed letter was not verified country by country on this site. Whether an apostille is wanted is read on the authority’s own document list or asked of it in writing; where it is wanted, the notarial route above is followed; how recent the bank’s letter has to be is set by the authority, and the apostille does not extend the document’s date.

Privately signed documents in the French table

In the legalisation table of the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, the last column of the row for Türkiye, documents signed by private persons (sous seing privé), carries the code “A”: an apostille is expected on them. The table does not say on which act the apostille is to be placed; in Turkish practice that act is the notarial one. Whether the French authority expects a notarial copy or the certification of a signature made before the notary was not verified on this site, and the question is put to the authority requesting the file.

Number and date formats in a bank statement translation

The translation is made from the whole document after the notarial act and the apostille are complete; whether the notary’s endorsement and the apostille are translated along with the statement is a question for the receiving authority. On a bank statement the real work is the format of numbers and dates: decimal and thousands separators and the day-month order are left as in the document, with a translator’s note where needed, rather than converted to the receiving country’s convention, and currency codes stay as they are. Abbreviations in transaction descriptions are expanded. The translation is certified by a notary (the translator being a yeminli tercüman, a sworn translator whose oath is recorded there), and whether that certification needs its own apostille is decided by the receiving authority.

Translation in the chain

Where does the translation fit?

  1. Document going abroad The sources describe two routes: an apostille on the original, or a translation certified by a notary with the apostille then confirming the notary’s signature. The receiving authority says which it wants.
  2. Foreign document used in Türkiye The sources describe an apostille in its country first, then a Turkish translation with notary certification; the Turkish institution receiving it confirms its own requirement.
  3. Sometimes none is needed Multilingual civil status extracts and some treaties remove the translation or the apostille. The authority that receives the document decides.
